Specialty Concrete

Flowable Fill & Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC)

Two specialty mixes designed to speed placement, reduce labor, and solve tough access and consolidation challenges.

Flowable Fill (Controlled Low-Strength Fill)

Flowable Fill (Controlled Low-Strength Fill)

Flowable Fill (Controlled Low-Strength Fill)

Flowable fill is a self-compacting, low-strength material placed in a fluid state. It self-levels with minimal effort and typically does not require tamping or vibration.

Why use Flowable Fill?

It's a reliable solution for void filling and backfill situations where traditional soil or granular fill compaction can be difficult. It can reduce labor, time, and equipment needs compared to conventional backfill methods.

Common Applications

  • Sewer trench backfill
  • Pile excavations
  • Foundation sub-base and pavement base fill
  • Filling hard-to-access voids

Delivery & Placement

Delivered by ready-mix truck and placed by chute, pump, or bucket. Its fluid properties allow it to flow into place and reach longer distances.

Note: Flowable fill is not structural concrete and does not require the same curing process, but it should be protected from freezing until fully hardened.

Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC)

Flowable Fill (Controlled Low-Strength Fill)

Flowable Fill (Controlled Low-Strength Fill)

SCC flows into place and consolidates under its own weight without separating. It supports faster placement and produces a more uniform surface finish with less manual finishing.

Where SCC Performs Best

  • Retaining walls
  • Bridges
  • Dams and heavily reinforced placements
  • Architectural or tight-tolerance pours

SCC is ideal when you need concrete performance and superior consolidation in complex formwork- especially where vibration is difficult or undesirable.

Which One Should You Use?

Use Flowable Fill for backfill and void filling where high structural strength isn’t required. Choose SCC when you need structural concrete performance with excellent consolidation in reinforced or complex placements.
